First Letter - July 12, 1942
This first letter is written about 2 -3 months after Jack & Norma had met on a blind date. Norma had gone on a vacation up to Camp Wa Wa Sum in Grayling, Michigan. Camp Wa Wa Sum (Plain View in Chippawa), that appears to have been a vacation spot in the 1940s for Michganders.

Dear Honey,
Have you been missing me?
That’s good! I know this boy sure
could have collected a lot of money today, because of you—Every time I set
myself to day dreaming of the fun we’ve been having together someone would say “Hey
Campbell, a penny for your thoughts”. With
all the concentrating going on that “Porteous Gal”, I would be rich.
You lucky kid, - just about the time this burg starts to
warm up (like today) you are forced to truck yourself up to God’s Country to
rest up from the rigors of gallivanting around the town with that Campbell Boy.
Honey – Not much has happened since we parted. Spent all my working day breaking in the new
man. Gee, the time sure drags on (no
date with you tonight) that’s bad.
Oh. My brother brought me a time to use as a spare – although
it is not quite the right size. It will
do until a better one comes along.
Emery’s vacation, that is the 2nd half has been
set bck for a while – Boy is Sis ever burnt up.
She was a set to leave today, but no soap. Last, I forgot neva. Freddy woke up 6 AM parked in front of her
house – some fun eh. Why don’t we do
that sometime.
Write and tell me about your trip, was it hat riding. How many good looking guys did you flirt with? If you find anything wrong with the writing
in this letter. Blame it on the 4
different pens I tried to use. None of them are any good. So I will close before it gets any worse.
Your Honey Jack
(Stinker)
P.S. I missed you like mad all day.
